We have all heard it said that true beauty comes from within. While this saying mostly refers to truly beautiful people having desirable characteristics that have little to do with how they look, it turns out that this same phrase could just as easily be used when discussing an integral component of external beauty: your skin.
A trendy haircut and perfectly applied make-up can certainly help enhance a woman’s external appearance; however, no amount of make-up or hair products can provide the same foundation for beauty as clear, youthful, glowing skin. Your skin is often one of the first things other people will notice about you, and the state of your skin can significantly influence your confidence levels and self esteem. To recognize just how much our skin can affect how we feel about ourselves and how much we enjoy our everyday lives, simply consider how many times you – or someone you know – have cancelled a date, skipped a school dance or spent extra time trying to hide behind excessive make-up or a different hairstyle because of a single blemish or other skin issues.
Fortunately, there is a variety of tactics we can use to ensure proper skin care and enjoy a healthy, clear complexion. One of the most important things to remember is that how well we take care of ourselves internally shows externally through our skin. This is one of the reasons why it is no surprise that smooth, healthy skin is seen as symbol of a person’s overall health and wellness, since our skin really is an external statement of our internal health.
With this in mind, it is easy to see how proper skin care truly does begin on the inside, which shows the importance of the influence our diet has on the health of our skin. Of course, this does not necessarily mean that your next visit to your dermatologist will include a meal plan to help you put together a skin-healthy diet. You are far more likely to simply be told to drink plenty of water and eat a well-rounded diet that includes a variety of foods.
Like other doctors, dermatologists often do not have extensive training in or knowledge of nutrition and, therefore, will likely recommend a balanced diet, and then follow that snippet of advice with a long, in-depth discussion of skin care that includes products proven through clinical studies, of which their knowledge will be much more advanced.
They actually are not that far off, since eating a balanced diet and staying hydrated are certainly important factors in achieving glowing, healthy skin. However, while we could certainly benefit from additional studies that look at nutrition and skin, there is evidence that particular foods can help or hurt your efforts and that certain nutrients are particularly helpful as part of an overall approach to correcting skin issues.
Vitamin E is one nutrient that is a powerful antioxidant and appears helpful in achieving more youthful-looking skin as you age. Vitamin E can be taken in supplement form; however, it is also easy to include in your diet through good sources of this nutrient, such as avocados, almonds, sunflower seeds, fortified cereals, tomatoes and safflower oil.
Vitamin A is also an important nutrient for good skin health and can be particularly helpful for those battling acne or aging skin. This vitamin has antioxidant qualities, helps increase collagen production and decreases sebum, which is partially responsible for acne-causing clogged pores. To increase your vitamin A intake, include foods like avocados and olive oil in your diet.
Vitamins E and A are just two of the nutrients that are essential for proper skin care, and there are many other dietary aspects that can affect your skin as well. Check out our other articles on beauty coming from within for more tips on dietary changes you can make to improve your complexion.
