As we know, what we put in our bodies affects our overall wellness and how healthy our skin appears. While we normally consider foods of primary importance when it comes to a healthy skin diet, what we drink is also an essential part of achieving glowing, youthful skin. The beverages we choose can assist us in improving our complexions or can work against our efforts and increase our risk for blemishes and visible signs of aging.
The first beverage that should be considered in a discussion of proper skin care is water. Water is essential to life, and staying hydrated is an important part of maintaining our overall health and wellness. This life-giving fluid also plays an essential role in keeping our skin looking healthy and youthful.
Water performs several functions that affect our skin. For example, water is necessary for proper cell hydration, for carrying nutrients to cells and for carrying toxins out of cells for elimination. Additionally, when we maintain proper levels of hydration, our bodies are able to sweat in a more efficient manner, which helps with the elimination of waste and is part of keeping our skin looking clear and clean.
Most health care professionals recommend drinking at least eight glasses of water each day, but you may want to talk to your health care provider to determine the right amount of water for you based on your weight and particular health status. Keep in mind that flavored water and beverages with high water content can count toward your daily intake, as long as they do not contain sugar, caffeine or alcohol.
Another healthy beverage that can be included in a skin care diet is green tea. This flavorful beverage has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, both of which help to ensure healthy skin. Recent studies have also touted its healthful benefits for skin, including reducing the damage caused by ultraviolet light and rejuvenating dying skin cells. Aside from the anti-inflammatory polyphenols that make green tea a skin care elixir, it also contains other nutrients believed to play a role in skin health, including zinc.
Along with beverages that are good for your skin, there are – of course – those that should be avoided or consumed only in limited qualities. For example, there is some evidence that dairy products increase the risk for acne breakouts; therefore, if you are acne-prone, you may want to reduce your consumption of cow’s milk. Non-dairy alternatives, such as unsweetened soy milk, almond milk or coconut milk can easily be substituted to allow you to enjoy milk beverages without increasing your risk for blemishes.
Foods and drinks high in sugar should also be enjoyed only on occasion. This includes soft drinks, sugary coffee drinks, and fruit and vegetable juices with added sugar. Alcohol can also negatively affect your skin’s appearance if consumed on a regular basis; therefore, if you are working towards achieving a more youthful, glowing complexion, you may want to consider limiting your alcohol consumption.
Increasing your intake of water and green tea, while avoiding sugary drinks and alcohol, is an effective way to provide your body with the hydration it needs to function properly and maintain optimal health. And as we have mentioned before, what is good for you body is good for your skin. Therefore, to improve your overall health and wellness, as well as your complexion, make sure you consider the beverages you drink each day as you make healthy dietary changes that will help improve your body’s ability to function properly and will keep your skin looking youthful and clear.
