Juicing for Beauty and Better Health: Part 3 – Fruit Smoothies and Your Skin

Most of us know that foods like chocolate, dairy products, processed foods and high-glycemic foods are bad for our skin. It has been shown through various studies that a diet high in carbohydrates and fat can actually make our skin look older and make our complexion lackluster. Knowing this, it is imperative that you improve your diet if you are combating skin that is dry, dull, uneven or making you look older than you are.

Part of improving your diet for better-looking skin is ensuring that your body has the nutrients it needs for effective waste removal and cell regeneration. Another important part of a healthy skin diet is making sure you stay hydrated. Creams, lotions and other beauty products can only get you so far; if you want your complexion to glow and look more youthful, you truly must start from within. Including fresh, homemade fruit and vegetable juices into your diet is an excellent way to do just that.

Juices and smoothies that you make at home are packed with nutrients and help you reach your daily goals for consuming enough water. Coupled with increasing your intake of water throughout the day, fresh juices can help your body stay hydrated, which is essential to making sure your skin is properly hydrated as well. While both fruit juices and vegetable juices are important to ensuring that you reach adequate levels of nutrient intake each day, most people prefer the taste of fruit juices. However, fruit juices tend to be higher in sugar, so keep this in mind when creating your daily eating plan.

When it comes to juicing for skin health, fruit smoothies can be particularly beneficial – although both fruit and vegetable juices benefit your skin – because of the high levels of antioxidants that help to prevent cell damage. Some fruits also contain vitamin E, which is well known of its healthful properties, including healing the skin. The fiber and water content in fruits assists your body in effectively removing waste products, while the overall boost in nutrients assists your body in functioning better on all levels.

Here are a few fruits that are great for making juices and smoothies:

  • Bananas (potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, manganese, fiber)
  • Strawberries (vitamin C, manganese, fiber, iodine, potassium, vitamin K, magnesium)
  • Kiwifruit (vitamin C, potassium, fiber)
  • Guava (vitamin C, vitamin A, iron, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin E, calcium)
  • Mango (vitamin A, vitamin, B2, vitamin C, fiber, vitamin E, vitamin K, phosphorus, calcium)
  • Papaya (vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin K, potassium, fiber)
  • Blackberries (vitamin K, vitamin C, manganese, vitamin B)

While an extraction juicer can be used to juice some fruits, it is generally preferable to make fruit smoothies using a blender. This will allow you to also benefit from the fruit’s fiber content and will make it easier to include softer fruits. A fresh, homemade fruit smoothie is a great way to start the day and is easy to drink while you are getting ready for work or school, making it an ideal breakfast option. Some people include additional nutrients in their fruit smoothies by adding a scoop of protein powder, a small amount of soy or almond milk, flaxseed oil or a spoonful of honey.

To achieve a glowing, youthful complexion, you must stay hydrated and provide your body with the vitamins and minerals it needs. Improving your overall diet to include more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat calcium sources and lean protein sources is a great place to start. Adding freshly made fruit smoothies to your daily routine will make it easy, convenient and delicious to add more fruits to your diet and improve the look and health of your skin.
