We all make beauty blunders now and then, but some of us might be regularly taking part in bad habits that affect the look and health of our skin without even knowing it. At the same time, we might think that we are doing just fine with our skin care routine, only to find out that the products we are using are actually doing more harm than good or that we are sabotaging our efforts by forging some of the most fundamental skin care basics. Even the highest-quality moisturizing creams and the best skin brightening products in the world cannot work as effectively and provide optimal results if we use them religiously while ignoring other important aspects of basic skin care. This is why anyone who desires smooth, clear, glowing skin must begin with the basics and avoid beauty blunders that can leave skin looking older, uneven, dull and lackluster.
Not getting enough sleep can wreak havoc on your skin. Puffy eyes, dark circles beneath the eyes and dull skin tone are just a few of things that can happen if you do not get enough rest each day. Working late into the night, spending too many nights out on the town or allowing stress to keep you awake long after you go to bed can all negatively affect the health and look of your skin, leaving your complexion looking lackluster and resulting in that tired look we all want to avoid.
If you find it difficult to fall asleep at night, try taking a warm bath, meditating or partaking in some relaxing yoga poses before going to bed.
Another important part of your bedtime routine should be cleansing and moisturizing your face. Never go to bed with make-up on, particularly because this can lead to an increased risk of clogged pores, blackheads and blemishes. If you go to sleep with eye make-up on, you also risk irritating the skin around your eyes or getting make-up in your eyes while you sleep.
Even women who never forget to apply sunscreen before heading to the beach or going hiking on a sunny day will often think it is okay to skip the sunscreen if the weather forecast calls for clouds. Keep in mind that clouds do not effectively block UV rays, which means sunscreen is just as important when it is cloudy as it is when the sun is shining in blue skies. It is also important to remember that it is not just the skin on your face that needs protecting; you should also apply sunscreen to your shoulders, neck, chest and hands, as well as your legs and feet if they are exposed.
Sun exposure is a major factor in causing the visible signs of aging, and it is not just your face that is subject to fine lines and wrinkles. The skin on your neck, chest and hands can show your age just as much as your face, so anyone wanting to keep their youthful appearance must protect these areas from the damaging rays of the sun as well.
Ending the day with a long, hot shower might be a great way to relax, but it also can strip the moisture from your skin and result in dryness, redness, irritation or itchiness. This is exacerbated if you are also using regular commercial soaps that dry out your skin. Try taking shorter showers in warm water, using moisturizing body cleansers, and moisturizing with bath oil, body cream or lotion immediately after stepping out of the shower and drying off.
